Courting the Muse: Embracing the WOW

by

(This post is part of a weekly series for subscribers exploring the creative process—one prompt at a time.)

This week’s creative prompt: Find your WOW

Part 1: WOW!

Just W.O.W!

Everywhere I look I’m finding inspiration. My muse is on FIRE!

But all I can do right now is take photos.

LOOK AT THAT! I mean, am I talkin’ inspiration or what???

I can’t wait to see what I’ll do with these when I have some paint to play with. Which will be soon (never soon enough!)

Mr. Spouse just arrived with a fully packed trailer and pickup–fully packed with stuff I had to leave behind when we moved. Because there just wasn’t any more room in the U-Haul and the car.

I think my paints are on it. Boxes and boxes of acrylics and oils. The stuff I’ve been jonesin’ for ever since I got here two weeks ago.

Even tho I don’t have a studio yet, even tho I’m planning on arting on the back porch for awhile, I really want those paints to art with.

I’m just not feelin’ the pastels right now, y’know. So I’ve done a few sketches, a few things with water crayons. Some experimenting with acrylic inks. And of course, digital.

But I can’t wait to PAINT!

Part 2: Promises. Promises

Next week there will be art to show you. Paintings. I’m not sure what they’ll be, other than inspired by my new surrounding. I’m thinking abstract landscapes. But I won’t know until I actually start painting.

Come back next week and see what I’ve done.

Part 3: Your turn:

Okay, enough about me drooling over trees and fog and water view inspiration—let’s talk about you. Yes, you.

This week, your mission—should you choose to accept it (and I really think you should)—is to look around and find your own WOW.

Not the Pinterest-perfect kind. I’m talkin’ the scrappy, blink-and-you-miss-it kind of WOW hiding in plain sight:

  • The rust pattern on that dumpster
  • The weird shadow your coffee mug makes at 3:07pm
  • That one weed breaking through a sidewalk like it’s got something to prove

Take a photo. Make a sketch. Write a poem. Whisper sweet nothings to it—I won’t judge. The point is: notice it. Capture it. Celebrate it.

Then come back here and drop me a comment. Tell me what caught your eye, what made you go WHOA or WOW or possibly WTH. Bonus points if it’s something most people would ignore.

Let’s make ordinary look extraordinary.
Muse is watching. Don’t keep her waiting.

‘Till next week–

You made it to the end—woohoo! 🎉 Before you head off, why not take a little piece of the studio with you? Join my list for weekly prompts and new work.

  1. I totally get it! Glad your new place is inspiring you! I’m going back east in a week – nyc and Nantucket – I’ve been there many times and know I’ll always find new inspiration

    • An abundance of inspiration, I’m sure! Wising you safe travels and a great trip.

  2. I had no paint with me on my vacation trip. While touring Schottland, I started to look for colors in uncommon places and color combinations. I kind of made it a game. Then snapped pictures, cropped them and made them blurry.

I ended up with totally weird pictures compared to my travel companions.

    • Ha! I so understand, Kerstin–while my companions take photos of flowers or buildings, I take photos of peeling paint and cracks in the sidewalk. I guess it’s an artist thing.

  3. Gorgeous area, lovely photos, Susan! It will be difficult to restrain your brushes and canvases!

    • I’m almost overwhelmed with possibilities, Hindi. We’ll see how this evolves.

Hey, welcome to my blog. I'm an artist, writer and sometimes a wise-ass observer of life. Thoughts are my own because really--who else would claim them?
